Seiko SBEX007/SLA025

For all the watch enthusiasts out there, it must be exciting to know that Seiko have decided to celebrate the 50th birthday of its legendary 6159-7001 diver with yet another limited-production of 1500 pieces re-issue.   The re-issued model watch has two references; where the SBEX007 is the reference used for the watch to be sold solely for the Japanese domestic market while the SLA025 is the reference for the rest of the world to go by.  Both watches are made in Japan with the only difference in the reference and serial number printed on the back for the casting.

The SBEX007 is the modern re-issued from the once known Seiko’s 6159-7001 divers watch.  While the re-introduced watch is much similar to its predecessor, Seiko have included a solid case design which made the watch allowed to an impressive water resistance depth of 300meters, which doubled any other professional diver watches in the market at the time.  To add the icing to the cake, Seiko has equipped the re-issued SBEX007 with its top of the line hi-beat Grand Seiko automatic movement at 36,000BPH.

The SBEX007 features a hands set which is practically the same as its predecessor.  The hands seems to have some kind of illusion that makes it look its got weight to them.  Perhaps its the gold color that makes you feel the weight.  Furthermore, the “red dot” seconds hand extends fully to cover the indices. To ensure legibility, Seiko was generous and almost coated the entire hand with LumiBrite.

Unlike other Seiko watches, you noticed the dial  is set deep into the watch which provides a visual depth to the presentation.  The sloping chapter ring has the line minute markets in white that further enhances the illusion.

The SBEX007 watch is overall impressive on all levels: the finishing of the case, the originality of the design, the beauty of the mechanics, and the surprising overall execution for a Prospex watch. On this front, Seiko doesn’t disappoint making the Seiko Prospex Diver 300m Hi-Beat SPEX007 a one of its kind collector’s masterpiece.
