The Ultimate Rolex Platona Ice Blue Ceramic-116506

Rolex Daytona Platinum Watch Ice Blue Ceramic 116506

Of all the Rolex Daytona’s watches out there that you can think of, which one stands out the most to you, and why? I’d have to say its the Rolex 50th Anniversary Cosmograph Platinum Daytona Ice Blue Ceramic watch ref. 116506. It’s not because the watch was introduced as a 50th-anniversary edition, nor was it Rolex’s first ever platinum Cosmograph watch. It was perhaps the abstract color matching of the ice blue dial with a chestnut brown cerachrom bezel that caught my attention. For me, it wasn’t the first, or second time seeing the watch in person that caught my eye. It was actually the third time, and first time putting on that platinum watch on my wrist in a photo-shoot that made me realize actually how heavy the platinum watch was.

Platinum, as we all know is among the heaviest metal known to mankind. While gold and platinum are similar in price per gram, platinum, being as dense as it is, more of it is needed when trying to make a ring. Additionally, platinum rings are normally 95% pure platinum, while 14k gold is approximately 59% gold (18k gold is roughly 75% gold). I guess that’s why the Rolex Daytona Platinum Watch Ice Blue Ceramic 116506 watch case and bracelet have the hallmark 950PT.

Switzerland Hallmark

“Although hallmarking in the Swiss territories dates back to Geneva in the 15th century there was no uniform system of hallmarking in Switzerland until 1881. Before that time, hallmarking was undertaken at the local level by the Swiss cantons. With the introduction of the Swiss system of hallmarking in 1881, there was uniformity throughout the nation.

Under the current law, on all gold, silver, platinum or palladium watches cases made in Switzerland or imported into Switzerland, there shall be affixed,[16] near the Maker’s Responsibility Mark and his indication of purity, the official Hallmark, the head of a Saint Bernard dog. Only precious metal watch cases must be hallmarked. Swiss hallmarking for other articles such as jewelry and cutlery is optional.

In addition to the Swiss hallmark, all precious metal goods may be stamped with the Common Control Mark of the Vienna Convention.”

As my everyday watch, I’m used to wearing the SBDX013 52mm emperor tuna (158 Grams) on my wrist, but for some reason, being platinum, that tiny 40mm 116506 Platona watch can surely hold its own weight (286 Grams). It would certainly be nice if Rolex decides to release a stainless steel version for the 116506 since not everybody can casually pull out 75,000 USD for a watch.
