Seiko SPB151 & SPB153 ‘Captain Willard’ 2020

After months of talking about picking up a new watch, I think I’ve finally found the one that suits me best. As I have mentioned over and over again about how I wanted a green color watch.

The Seiko Prospex SPB151 & SPB153 are the reincarnation of the Seiko 6105-8110, which was nick named ‘Captain Willard’, from the american classic war film, Apocalypse Now, which was worn by the movie actor, ‘Martin Sheen’.

Another fame that the Seiko 6105-8110 was recognized for was because it was worn by one of Japan’s most popular and well respected explorer, ‘Naomi Uemura ‘. The Seiko 6105-8110 accompanied the famous Japanese explorer on many of his well known explorations.

For instance, Uemura went on a one-man dog-sledge run from Greenland to Alaska, a journey of 12,000 km that took 18 months. He was the first person to reach the North Pole alone. He was also the first to descend the Amazon river in a boat, and the first to ascend the North American Denali Mountain in winter – the third most prominent and solitary peak of the world.

For those who did not know, this was actually the second time that the ‘Captain Willard’ was re-issued. The first re-issue was introduced back in 2019, as the SLA033. Of course, there are differences between the two re-issue models, but we’ll leave it up to you to decide whether the changes are worth the price differences.

The original 6105-8110 came in at 44mm while the stainless steel cases of the SPB151 & SPB153 models measure to 42.7mm. Slimming down the watch case and widening them with 20mm lugs, so they can be worn more securely and it opens up a ton of aftermarket choices of bracelets to choose from.

In terms of the price and specifications, the latest ‘Captain Willard’ was much easier to approach than the previous re-issue. The price for the newest re-issue ‘Captain Willard’ was where I’ve made the decision for my next purchase. The price is nearly a quarter of the previous re-issue, SLA033 model at 1100.00USD (SPB153) and 1300.00USD(SPB151).
