Seiko’s Alpinist watch was first introduced back in 1961 as a watch for becoming a reliable timepiece for Japanese mountain climbers and other sports enthusiasts. Since then, there’s been a total of nine generations of Alpinist models that have been introduced.

The latest Seiko Alpinist model that is currently available in the market is the Seiko Prospex SPB157J1 ‘Baby Alpinist’. The collection is offered in three colors: Green (SPB155J1), Blue (SPB157J1), and Grey(SPB159J1).

While comparing with the traditional sized Alpinist models ie: SARB017, SBDC089, SBDC91, SBDC093), the internal compass bezel presents a cleaner dial, and by removing the additional crown at 4 o’clock, the crown guards have reduced the overall size of the watch case.

The slimmed down BB Alpinist is now presented in a 38mm case size instead of the regular 39.5mm size, and with a lug-to-lug of 46 mm. Its thickness also reduced from 13.2mm to just 12.9mm, steering it more towards a dress watch instead of a tool watch. The movement used in the baby Alpinist is the 6R35 caliber, which has 70 hours of power reserve and beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour.

Another noticeable changes you’ll find on the Baby Alpinists is that the glass has now been changed to a domed sapphire crystal, the tip on the seconds hand with a touch of red. Some of you may be pleased with the absence of the date cyclops and rotating compass bezel. Personally, its the sand like texture gradient dial design that caught my attention with the baby Alpinist.

The cost for the baby Alpinist models are almost the same as the normal sized Alpinist, even though it has been downsized. The cost for the SPB155J1 (Green Dial), that comes with a stainless steel bracelet goes for 725.00USD. Whereas the other two models, SPB157J1 (Blue Dial), and SPB159J1 (Grey Dial) goes for 700.00USD. Once again, Seiko has done a good job with the Alpinist to provide another option for watch enthusiasts to consider.
