When it comes to exclusives, limited editions watch models from Seiko, you can assume 8 out of 10 times that the exclusives and rare watch models are for and from the Japanese domestic market (JDM). However, Seiko US recently has launched two new timepieces of its own that will be sold exclusively in the American market with a limited edition of 500 pieces.
A special color matching set of co-designed cufflinks, are included for both the (blue) SLA053 and (red) SLA059 models. Its actually quite common for brands like Omega or Audemars Piguet to include matching cuff-links with the purchase of their wristwatch even to this day. Over the last couple of years, many of the dials designs on Seiko watches were inspired mainly from Japanese arts & crafts.
The designs on the two SLA053 & SLA059 300MM models feature a “Seigaiha” (or “blue ocean waves”) pattern on their dials, in either a vivid blue (SLA053) or a deep burgundy (SLA059). The intense blue dial and the deep black of the high-performance one-piece stainless steel case with black hard coating evoke the ocean under moonlight. Following ISO standards for saturation diving at depths of up to 300 meters, this exceptional timepiece is powered by a 26-jewel caliber 8L35 automatic movement, assembled expressly for diver’s watches at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio, with the increased torque necessary for the most challenging dives.
This mechanical movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a power reserve of approximately 50 hours, and offers manual winding capability. For enhanced legibility, the hands and markers feature LumiBrite coating, with LumiBrite accents on the black ceramic uni-directional elapsed timing bezel. With an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, date window and screwdown crown, this high-intensity timepiece includes a black silicone strap and is packaged in a special collectors’ box. 300m Water Resistant. Unlike the original Marinemaster, the SLA053 and SLA059 watches of today also have a black ceramic rotating bezel insert.
The dials are perhaps one of my favorite that Seiko produces for its dive watches. With the right mixture of classic elegance and proportions with a hand and hour-marker style that became distinctive to Seiko. The SLA059 has a mixture of brushed and polished case with matching steel bracelet (in the box is also a matching black silicone strap), while the SLA053 has a hard-coated black steel case and only comes with matching black silicone strap (with matching black coated buckle).
According to Seiko, the reason why they released two versions of the Seigaiha dial Prospex watches is to have one that celebrates the ocean waves at night (the black and blue SLA053) and another to represent the ocean at dawn with the burgundy and steel SLA059. As explained before, both versions will be sold exclusively in the United States market starting in August 2021 for the SLA053 and November 2021 for the SLA059. Price for the Seiko Prospex Seigaiha reference SLA053 watch is $3,200 USD, and price for the SLA059 is $3,300 USD.
