Konstantin Chaykin, Master of Watchmaking

Konstantin Chaykin

Konstantin Chaykin is a talented Russian inventor, a master of high watchmaking and the owner of the ‘Konstantin Chaykin’ Manufacture. It is the only Russian company producing unique, high class mechanical watches with proprietary calibers and describes itself as is the absolute leader in the luxury watch segment of the modern clock and watchmaking industry in Russia.

Each timepiece could be considered as a work of art, combining sophisticated mechanics and incredible artistic execution. Currently, Konstantin Chaykin is the only Russian member of the International Academy of Independent Watchmakers. He is a creator of the most complicated clock which was ever made in Russia (26 different indicators of horological and astronomical values). Konstantin Chaykin is a self taught watch and clock maker who is often mentioned by critics as one of the best in the world.

One of Chaykin’s most famous creations, “Joker”

The Russian watch maker is best known for the “Joker” watch, which was first introduced back in Basel World 2017 and a limited edition of 99 pieces was quickly sold out. The Joker is powered by an ETA 2814 base movement with an in-house module of just 61 parts that drives the novel time display: two sub-dials, positioned like eyes in a face, for hours respectively minutes, and a moon phase at six o’clock resembling a smiling mouth.

According to Chaykin, the more you look at a dial, the less appealing it will become. However, with the Joker, Chaykin tried to create a watch capable of always being a source of joy and happiness for the observer, at any time throughout the day. The 42mm steel case housing features a bezel that’s been decorated with the four suits of playing cards and a “J” at 12 o’clock. Different types of guillochè decoration adorn the dial which is protected by an anti-reflective sapphire glass that also protects the movement on the back, making it visible.

The two crowns are used to adjust respectively the minute disc and hour disc, at 3 o’clock. A fixed crown at 9 o’clock allows you to adjust the moon phase, represented by a large mouth-shaped window at 6 o’clock. Production was a limited edition of 99 pieces.

Chaykin’s Joker watch is certainly one of the most popular and unique time pieces in the entire world of independent watchmaking. Its not often you would hear new watches reselling at even double the list price. Endless waiting lists and actual inability to find certain watches in line with sales prices.
